The holistic nature of AYURVEDA is apparent from the fact that it categorically states medicine should be person specific. That is to say that the maintenance of good health and the deliverance from disease can only be achieved if the doctor has complete picture of the patient as a person.
AYURVEDA believes that the person is comparable to the cosmos in that they are made up of the five forms of matter: earth , fire , water, air and ether. These elements exists in the body in the form of Doshas; Vata or wind, Pitta, an amalgom of fire and earth and Kapha, a combination of ether and water . When any of these Doshas increases or decreases in relation to the others the healthy balance of the body is lost resulting in illness.
Health, therefore according to AYURVEDA, is a state of the balance of three Doshas and also a condition in which the three aspects of the human being - the mind , the body and the soul are in a natural and tranquil state.
